May I Take Your Place?

11.13.2002 | 12:03 am

It doesnt matter how old you are, or how old your children are, there are just certain times in life when you want to step in and take over their pain. One of my favorites, mousepoet said it perfectly. Today was one of those days with my girls. Both my daughters are grown women with adult lives of responsibility. My oldest is a first year teacher. She teaches seniors in high school in a rural part of our metropolis. My second, her sister, is expecting her third child. She lives too far away. How far is it to Bethlehem (PA)? asked the wise men. Too far! I reply.

I came home today ready to face the challenge of whipping out the fourth of six papers I must do for my online literature class. The first phone call was back to Pennsylvania. How are you Marie? pause...uh, well SOGGY. In our family that is the word that epitomizes blah, dull, not-so-good, miserable, awful, and so on. She is so tired of being pregnant, but knows she must to wait. It seems that those horrible (hemorrhoids) have flared up to a point where she is in pain walking, sitting...living. Melanie had to stay home from pre-school today too. She was as she said, A little bit sick. I was coughing a lot, Grandma. Did mommy give you some medicine? I ask. No, I just have a cough drop. But I am better now. says the sweet little voice. Why am I not there???

Eldest daughter had an awful day with boys from the football team. It seems they left savage pornography in scribbled notes under their desks. She was going to have to call parents. (UGH) and let them know that their young men would be in ISS, in school suspension tomorrow. She was handling that pretty well, but has to also face the entodontist tomorrow afternoon. Are you in a lot of pain? I ask. Yes Mom, it really hurts. she answers. I was lucky he had a cancellation for tomorrow afternoon. she adds.

I have been through each of these afflictions at one time or another during my life. But honestly, I would do it for each of them again and again if it were possible. *sigh and cry*
